Board of FÁS plans for the future

Published on 7th September, 2010

The Board of FÁS concluded two days of meetings today, 7th September 2010. The Board agenda consisted of three main topics - current performance, a review of contracted training provision and the development of a strategy for the future.

Commenting on the work of the Board since its formation in January of this year, Chairman, Michael Dempsey said: ‘FÁS has an ambitious programme to deliver in 2010 to support people who are unemployed and who are seeking guidance, training and re-skilling opportunities. We are pleased to report that our targets for guidance, training interventions, community employment and other supports are all on track. During 2010 we will provide training, community employment and other opportunities to over 150,000 people.’

Regarding future plans, Mr. Michael Dempsey said: ‘Given the many challenges facing people seeking employment now and into the future, it is vital that the body charged with providing high quality skills training delivers on this goal. We are committed to delivering a new strategy and plan for the future which will ensure that we provide high quality skills’ training to the people that we are mandated to serve and which will equip them to compete for jobs now and into the future. This strategy will be provided to the Tánaiste in October.’

The Board also considered a draft report on its contracted training provision, which followed a detailed review of this aspect of the organisation’s work. Contracted training represents about 25% of the overall FÁS training provision. The Board has sought some additional information and clarifications on the draft findings. The report will be finalised in the coming weeks and will be released as soon as possible thereafter.

Chairman, Michael Dempsey said: ‘As a Board we will ensure that this review is brought to completion and any necessary corrective action is taken. More importantly we will ensure that the strategic improvements planned by management are implemented quickly. We have sought a number of clarifications regarding the draft report. It will be completed and released as quickly as possible. It is a core value of FÁS that that each person receives high quality training which is properly assessed and certified. In order to ensure the integrity of all certificates both now and in the future, it is essential that this matter is dealt with in a thorough fashion. Unfortunately this process has delayed the issuing of some certificates and FÁS regrets that this has been necessary. However any outstanding issues are being resolved and certificates will be issued as quickly as possible.'
