Quarry Skills Certification Scheme

The Quarries Skills Certification Scheme (QSCS) provides for the training, assessment, certification and registration of non-craft operatives within the Quarrying sector.  QSCS is covered under Schedule 1 of the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work (Quarries) Regulations 2008.


The Aims and Benefits of the QSCS are to provide opportunities for participants to become competent, confident and committed in applying the skills, knowledge and attitude that are associated with their occupations in Quarrying.

Must have NUI Train the Trainer qualification or equivalent and complete FÁS approved assessor/verifier course.

Appropriate technical / professional education or training as required.

Trainers must have:

A recognised Shotfiring Qualification

Technical Competence

The skills and knowledge required in relation to the subject in which the Instructor is to provide training

Competent to instruct and demonstrate the principles of a SPECIFIC quarry plant item or Slinging/Signalling.

Competent to instruct and demonstrate the duties of an Explosives Quarry Supervisor.

Competent to instruct and demonstrate the principles of Quarry Shotfiring.

Pedagogical Competence

The skills and knowledge required in the science and principles of instructing/training

Ability to assess the learner’s progress in training. Ability to assess their effectiveness in passing on skills and knowledge to the learner. An understanding of human learning and the ability to apply the principles of effective learning.

Work Experience

The relevant practical on-the-job experience gained by the Instructor

At least five years relevant work experience in Construction/Quarries is essential. At least two years experience operating of a SPECIFIC quarry plant item or Slinging/Signalling is essential. Previous teaching/ training experience is desirable.

At least five years Shotfiring work experience in Construction/Quarries is essential. At least one year operating as an Explosives Supervisor in the Quarry Sector is essential. Previous teaching/ training experience is desirable.

At least five years Shotfiring work experience in Construction/Quarries is essential. At least two years experience operating as a Shotfirer in the Quarry Sector is essential. Previous teaching/ training experience is desirable.
