On successful completion of the programme the learner is awarded a FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Freight Forwarding

The Course

The Freight Forwarding Clerk Traineeship provides an excellent foundation for unemployed people who wish to undertake the required training to work in the Freight Forwarding Industry.

The Freight Forwarding Clerk Traineeship is a 35 week programme.   The Traineeship consists of 23 weeks off-the-job training with FÁS and 12 weeks on-the-job training with a host employer.

The Job

A Freight Forwarding Clerk is a qualified worker capable of carrying out a range of activities including the following:  dealing with customs and excise formalities, assembling export documentation for the outward ships bag and weighing, measuring and calculating freight charges on cargo.   A Freight Forwarding Clerk should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as they will be liaising on a daily basis with owners and contracted transport operators.

The Person

You must have reached the statutory school leaving age of 16 years and be educated to Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent.   An interest in working in the operations, administration or sales support areas of the freight industry is desirable.   You should also have good numeracy and literacy skills, attention to detail and communication and interpersonal skills.

Progression

When qualified you will have opportunities to progress to the position of Foreperson and Logistics Manager through experience and further studies with bodies such as the  Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.   The IATA and FIATA offer Certificate and Diploma Courses in International Transport, Shipping and Freight.   For further details you should contact your local Institute of Technology.
