On successful completion of the programme the learner is awarded a FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Legal Services Support
The Course
The Legal Secretary Traineeship provides both school leavers, mature applicants and unemployed people with an excellent foundation in the skills and knowledge required to become a Legal Secretary.
The duration of the Legal Secretary Traineeship is 33 weeks. The Traineeship consists of 23 weeks off-the-job training with FÁS and 10 weeks on-the-job training with a host employer.
The Job
A qualified Legal Secretary is an invaluable asset to a Law Firm. A Legal Secretary combines high levels of office administration skills with the specific knowledge and understanding required to deal effectively with legal communications and documentation. The legal secretary will be familiar with common types of legal documentation found in any law firm and will possess an insight into the structure and role of the Irish Court system.
The Person
You must have reached the statutory school leaving age of 16 years and be educated to Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent. Mature applicants are welcome. You should have excellent verbal and written communication skills and a minimum typing speed of 25 wpm to gain access to this traineeship. A neat and well groomed appearance is also desirable. An interest in the law would be an advantage.
Progression
When qualified you can pursue certificate and diploma courses through the Irish Institute of Legal Executives and Griffith College. Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programmes in legal studies are also available through the Letterkenny Institute of Technology, the Law Society of Ireland and many other colleges.
