The Course

The Outdoor Activity Instructor Traineeship provides school leavers and the unemployed with the skills and related knowledge to work as qualified Outdoor Activity Instructors in the outdoor activity and education industry.

The duration of the Outdoor Activity Instructor Traineeship is 45 weeks. The Traineeship consists of 37 weeks off-the-job training with FÁS and 8 weeks on-the-job training with a host employer.

The Job

An Outdoor Activity Instructor is a qualified worker capable of carrying out competently, under normal operational conditions, the day-to-day tasks involved in instructing in the Outdoor Recreational Industry.

These skills and tasks include mountaineering, rock climbing, orienteering, canoeing, rescue emergency care, instructing and leading.

The Person

You should have reached the current statutory school leaving age of 16 years, be educated to Leaving Certificate standard and have an interest in outdoor recreational activities.

You should have excellent communication skills and enjoy working with children, adults and groups. You must be able to swim and cope with heights and have average athletic ability. Previous experience in outdoor activities would be an advantage

Progression

When qualified you will have opportunities to progress to senior positions in the outdoor activity sector through your experience and further education/training which you may undertake in areas such as Outdoor Education, and Sports Management.
