On successful completion of the programme the learner is awarded a FETAC Certificate in Racehorse Grooming
The Course
The Racing Groom Traineeship aims to provide both school leavers and jobseekers with an excellent foundation in the skills and practical experience required to gain employment in the care of horses within the thoroughbred industry. This traineeship is aimed at people who neither aspire to nor are suitable as competitive race jockeys but who are passionate about horses and the equestrian business.
The Racing Groom Traineeship is a 30 week programme. The Traineeship consists of 20 weeks directed training with FÁS and 10 weeks on-the-job training under the supervision of local racehorse trainers. This Traineeship is run in partnership with RACE at the Curragh, Co. Kildare.
The Job
The Racing Groom is a skilled worker in the horse racing industry capable of carrying out competently the range of tasks required in the role of racing groom including stable routine and maintenance, grooming and the identification and avoidance of hazards associated with the riding and handling of thoroughbred horses.
The Person
You must have reached the current statutory school leaving age of 16 years. Ideally, you would have attained Junior Certificate standard or FETAC/NCVA Foundation level.
You must enjoy working with horses and demonstrate an aptitude for working and caring for horses. You must be physically fit with good balance and co-ordination and have a love of horses and outdoor work. Personal skills required include a good attitude to work, the ability to listen and learn and a disciplined and determined character.
Progression
Completion of this Traineeship will enable you to be employed as a Racing Groom or in a stable staff position with opportunities to progress to roles such as Travel Head Lad, Work Rider or Assistant Race Horse Trainer.
