Cancer is a disease where abnormal cells grow out of control and can spread to other parts of the body. It is one of the leading causes of death in Ireland after stroke and heart disease. The commonest type of cancer in Ireland is skin (non-melanoma) followed by breast, colorectal, lung and prostate. The largest number of cancers occurs in the 65+ age group. Men and women have similar risks of developing cancer, although men are more likely to die from it. Early diagnosis and treatment can cure or control many forms of cancer. Ongoing research into new treatments continues to provide benefits and improve survival rates.
