Friedreich's Ataxia is a genetic disorder of the central nervous system which affects physical co-ordination and movement. It usually occurs in children between the ages of six and sixteen years but can occur later. It results in a progressive breakdown in the person's co-ordination, clumsiness, difficulties with balance and eventually slurred speech. The person eventually is confined to a wheelchair. It does not impede brain function.

The Society is the national voluntary organisation that cares for people with Friedreich's and other Ataxias. It also acts as a forum for those with the condition and their relatives. They provide information, respite and advocacy services. In addition, they help fund research and lobby for better services for those affected and their relatives.
