Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is the term given to any injury to the brain sustained during a person's life. It can result from road traffic accidents, falls, assaults, brain haemorrhages or tumours, viral infections, disease or a lack of oxygen. Up to 10,000 people acquire brain injuries every year in Ireland. A person with a head injury may be affected in several ways, physical, which affects how the body works; cognitive, which affects how the brain thinks, learns and remembers; or emotional and behavioural i.e. outbursts of in appropriate emotions. It is important to note that not everyone with head injury will have problems is these areas.
