Two common causes of kidney disease are Chronic Nephritis, which is inflammation affecting both kidneys simultaneously and Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). Chronic nephritis accounts for well over 60% of the deaths from terminal kidney failure. PKD is an hereditary disease which is a more common condition than cystic fibrosis or muscular dystrophy.
Treatment is by dialysis. Each year about 170 people arrive at the stage of terminal renal (kidney) failure and would die within a few weeks if something cannot be done to replace the function of their now dead kidneys. There are approx 400 people on dialysis treatment of which almost 230 have to attend major city hospitals for kidney machine treatment. The remainder carry out life-saving cleansing and filtering at home by the CAPD method (Continues Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis).
