Muscular Dystrophy is a collective term for a wide range of disorders that result from progressive degeneration and weakening of muscles (neuromuscular disorders), affecting both adults and children. All forms of muscular dystrophy are hereditary, although neuromuscular conditions vary in how they are inherited, how they develop, age of onset, severity, symptoms, treatment and prognosis. The most common form of muscular dystrophy is known as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and it only affects male children. It leads to muscle deterioration and eventually the person loses the power to walk.
