Paraplegia/paralysis are terms used to describe impairments that result from damage to the spinal cord or disease. The World Health Programme's definition of impairment, disability and handicap, is that 'paralysis can be the result of a spinal cord injury (impairment), causing a functional limitation to two limbs (paraplegia) or four limbs (quadriplegia)'. Paralysis of a limb(s) means a person will have no power of movement and maybe no sensation in that body part; this can lead to difficulties in undertaking some tasks and mobility.
