Spina bifida is a neural tube defect that occurs before birth. The most common effects of spina bifida are paralysis, deformities, poor sensation, bladder & bowel incontinence and hydrocephalus.
At least 80% of people with spina bifida have some degree of Hydrocephalus. This condition is due to an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles of the brain, resulting in raised pressure inside the head. It is treated by inserting a shunt to drain the fluid. Those with spina bifida and hydrocephalus may experience some of the following difficulties: reduced concentration span epilepsy, difficulties with short term or/and working memory, inability to follow multiple instructions and comprehending complex sentence structure, difficulties with reasoning ability and logical thinking.
